Kennedy Erlwanger is an Associate Professor in the School of Physiology. He joined the school of Physiology as a lecturer in May 2003. Prior to that, he had been a senior lecturer at the University of Zimbabwe from 1994. Kennedy’s educational qualifications are a DPhil (Veterinary Sci) University of Zimbabwe, MSc (Neuroscience) University of Edinburgh and Bachelor of Veterinary Science (University of Zimbabwe). More recently he was awarded a Postgraduate Diploma in Health Science Education from the University of the Witwatersrand. He serves on several school, faculty and university committees. He is the chairman of the Wits animal ethics committee and is the immediate past president of the Physiological Society of Southern Africa. Internationally he serves on the council of the African Association of Physiological Sciences. He serves as external examiner for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes at several local and regional universities. He is a recipient of the Phillip V Tobias Medal and Convocation Distinguished Teacher’s Award for Basic Sciences from the faculty of Health Sciences, University of the Witwatersrand.
His research interests are gastrointestinal and nutritional physiology. He also has a keen interest in medicinal plants and phytochemicals as interventions to programme for good metabolic health .
The research has produced over 70 peer reviewed original scientific manuscripts and has been presented at various scientific fora locally and internationally.
Associate professor Erlwanger first received a Y2 rating from the NRF in 2005. In 2010 he was rated C3 and retained the rating in 2016.
