Professional Summary

Dr. Umar has over 20 years of international experience in building and civil construction research, teaching, and practice, worked in UK, Oman, and Pakistan. His industrial experience spans over six years where he had a chance to worked on several building and road (B&R) projects, from initiation to completion phases in a complex municipal environment. His academic career as a Lecturer was started in 2012 by joining A’Sharqiyah University in Oman – where he worked for eight years. Apart from teaching undergraduate and postgraduate modules in the areas of construction management and civil engineering, he contributed to the development of new undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in construction project management, quantity surveying and commercial management, and engineering management. He worked on several committees including University Health and Safety Committee, University Library Committee, College Quality Assurance and Accreditation Committee, College Academic Board, College Assessment and Review Committee, and College Recruitment Committee. He has the credit of establishing construction engineering management and civil engineering state of the art laboratories which are successfully used in teaching, research, and consultancy. He was the founding member of Sustainability and Renewable Energy research group – the first research group formed in the College of Engineering. He has played an active role in the institution accreditation though Oman Academic Accreditation Authority (OAAA) process. Dr. Umar was also part of the committee which leaded the Civil Engineering programme accreditation process through Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). He is currently working as a Senior Lecturer in University of the West of England and teaches a variety of modules in the areas of construction management, both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Dr Umar’s teaching is student-centred, and research informed, particularly ensuring equality, diversity and inclusion in learning and teaching for the improvement of students’ satisfaction and engagement. He is currently supervising four PhD, ten postgraduate, and seven undergraduate research projects. He is the link tutor (Programme Leader) of two programmes “Architecture Technology and Design” and “Building Service Engineering” offered at Global College of Engineering and Technology in Oman. He is external examiner for MSc Water and Environmental Engineering programme at University of Portsmouth and PhD Examiner at Coventry University, Swinburne University of Technology Australia, National College of Business Administration and Economics, Pakistan, Salford University, and Satbayev University, Kazakhstan. Construction Management, construction materials, engineering sustainability, renewable and sustainable energy, waste and resource management, and construction 4.0 are the main areas of Dr. Umar’s research interest. He has established research collaboration with some renown researchers across the global 2 Sensitivity - Public and have produced more than 100 research articles published in highly indexed journals including Materials (IF 3.748), Buildings (IF 3.10), Applied Sciences (IF 2.838), Engineering, Construction and Architectural Management (3.850), Safety Science (IF 6.392), Municipal Engineer (Scopus: 2.0), Management, Procurement and Law (Scopus: 1.60), Engineering Sustainability (WoS: 1.063), Water (IF 3.530) and Energy (WoS: 1.035). Apart from receiving “researcher of the year” and “active researcher” awards, his research and supervision has attracted a number of external grants (over £ 6 Million), undergraduate internship grants (£ 16,100), travel grants (£ 12,300) and workshop grants (£ 4,200) – the details of which are provided in “research funding” section of CV. Dr. Umar is a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Oman committee which run the ICE local branch. He has the responsibility of organizing learning events and students and graduate’s competitions. He is an approved mentor of the ICE and helping graduate engineers to become professionally qualified engineers. Dr. Umar is also an approved STEM ambassador where he actively participates in school events to encourage students to pursue higher education in the built environment discipline. He has obtained his PhD from the London South Bank University where he has developed tools and guidelines for the improvement of safety performance in GCC construction industry. He is registered as a Chartered Civil Engineer (CEng) with Engineering Council UK and is a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers (MICE). Prior to this, he has completed a master’s degree, a bachelor’s degree (Honours) and a Diploma in Civil Engineering. Tariq is a Fellow of Higher Education Academy (FHEA).
