Mohammad Yunus

Dr. Mohammad Yunus is a development economist with more than three decades of research experience in agriculture, food security, rural development, and agricultural value chains in Bangladesh. As Research Director and former Division Chief of the Agricultural and Rural Development Division at the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS), he has led and contributed to a wide range of nationally and internationally funded studies on agricultural transformation, food insecurity, crop diversification, farmers’ supply response, public food distribution systems, irrigation economics, and rural livelihoods. His work has focused extensively on agricultural productivity, food market integration, food price dynamics, nutrition, poverty reduction, and resilience in vulnerable and climate-exposed regions of Bangladesh. He has also undertaken major studies on poultry supply chains, agro-food trade facilitation, fisheries and coastal livelihoods, and the economics of water resource management. Dr. Yunus has served as Team Leader or Study Director for several large-scale research projects supported by organizations such as the Ministry of Planning of Bangladesh, International Food Policy Research Institute, Food and Agriculture Organization, World Food Programme, Asian Development Bank, and World Bank.

Dr. Yunus has an extensive publication record covering agriculture, food systems, poverty, and rural transformation. His scholarly contributions include journal articles, books, monographs, working papers, and policy reports on topics such as food grain consumption, food market performance, agricultural wages, non-crop agriculture, rice prices and poverty reduction, food insecurity in backward regions, and the impacts of climate vulnerability on rural livelihoods. He has co-authored the research monograph Bangladesh Food Market Performance: Instability, Integration, and Institutions and contributed chapters to major volumes on food security, agricultural diversification, and water resource management in Bangladesh. His research findings have informed national policies on food security, agricultural planning, public food grain storage, and social protection, while also supporting regional cooperation initiatives related to agro-food trade and transit. He has presented research papers at numerous national and international conferences organized by institutions such as CGIAR, UNESCAP, IFPRI, ADB, FAO, and the World Bank, and has served on national technical committees, including the Agriculture Census and sanitary and phytosanitary working groups of the Government of Bangladesh.
