Professor Anthony Ekata Ogbeibu currently lectures in the Department of Animal and Environmental Biology, University of Benin, Nigeria. He obtained the PhD degree from the University of Benin in 1991 and a Postgraduate Certificate in Environmental Education from the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow in 1991. He served as Honourable Commissioner for Works and Transport in Edo State in 1993. He participated in the 1998-1999 Niger Delta Environmental Survey (NDES), and was an invited National Expert on Benthos in the Third Regional Workshop on Gulf of Guinea Large Marine Ecosystem Project sponsored by UNIDO, UNDP and NDES. He was sponsored by the Cheetah Conservation Trust for the 2004 Environmental Education Training in Namibia. Prof. Ogbeibu is a Fellow of the Nigerian Conservation Foundation, a member of the Nigerian Environmental Society, Nigerian Association for Aquatic Sciences, Nigerian Society for Biological Conservation, Fisheries Society of Nigeria, North American Benthological Society, International Society of Limnology and the International Association for Impact Assessment. He has published extensively in the areas of macrobenthic invertebrates, zooplankton, fisheries, physico-chemistry of waters and their applications in biodiversity conservation, pollution/impact assessment studies and biostatistics. He has been the Editor of Tropical Freshwater Biology journal for the past 19 years and a reviewer for Water Research, Reviewer and Editorial Board member of Asian Network for Scientific Information and Academic Journals.
His research has focused on water quality and the taxonomy, distribution and ecology of Nigerian fresh- and brackish water invertebrate fauna. Through his research, some new species have been added to the Nigerian zooplankton checklist. More specifically, he has explored the bio-indicator status of common invertebrates in the prediction, assessment and monitoring of anthropogenic activities and associated impacts on the aquatic ecosystems. He has authored over 65 publications in local and international journals and over 90 technical papers on EIA (Environmental Impact Assessment), EER (Environmental Evaluation Reports), PIA (Post Impact Assessment), Environmental Monitoring and Conservation Education. He also spares time in delivering guest lectures on environmental issues, and in the training of researchers in data handling and statistical analysis.
He has been honoured with several awards, amongst which are the Distinguished Alumnus Award by the University of Benin Alumni Association Worldwide, and Peace Ambassador by the Universal Peace Federation.
