Juran Krishna Sarkhel is a Professor of Library and Information Science and the Director of the Directorate of Open and Distance Learning in the University of Kalyani, West Bengal, India. Before joining the University of Kalyani in 2007, he spent twenty years on the faculty at the Vidyasagar University, West Bengal and also served as Director of the Directorate of the Distance Education (2005-07), and the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Commerce (1999-2003).

Obtained MLIS (Gold Medalist) and Ph D degrees from Jadavpur University. He is actively involved in teaching and research in Information Processing & Retrieval, and Information Services. 14 scholars have already been awarded Ph.D degree under his supervision. Completed one UGC research project and has published 01 book, 08 study materials and several research papers in internationally standard journals and seminar volumes.

Obtained the Certificate of Honour from the Indian Association of Special Libraries and Information Centres, Kolkata in recognition of his admirable initiative, imagination, creativity and interest for the development and modernization of library and information services in India.

Served as the Visiting Scientist of the DRTC of the Indian Statistical Institute, Bangalore, guest faculty of different universities and institutes, member of the Board of Studies and Research Boards of many universities. Also served as an expert member in the preparation and revision of course materials of the LIS programme of IGNOU, New Delhi. Llife member of IATLIS, ILA and BLA and Member of the Governing Body of the Indian Association of Special Libraries & Information Centres (IASLIC). Presently, he is the Honourary Editor of the Indian Library Science Abstract and member of the Editorial Board of IASLIC Bulletin. He attended and presented papers at the international conferences at Athens (Greece), Singapore and Bangladesh, and visited different library schools of Malaysia, Italy, Switzerland and Dubai.
