Associate Professor Dr. Ahmad Zaharin Aris grew up at Penang, Malaysia. He obtained his Ph.D degree in the field of Environmental Science (Hydrochemistry) from Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) at the age of 25. To date, he is the youngest PhD recipient at UMS and also one of the youngest in Malaysia. Dr. Ahmad Zaharin Aris is an Associate Professor at the Department of Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Environmental Studies, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) specializing in the field of Hydrochemistry, Geochemistry, Heavy Metals, Water Quality, Environmental Analysis. Previously, he was a Senior Lecturer at the same department and was employed as a Tutor at UPM in 2007. He was appointed as the Head of Environmental Forensics Research Centre (ENFORCE) at UPM from 2009-2014 and Dr. Zaharin, is currently the Deputy Dean (Research, Postgraduate and Development). He has supervised 30 bachelor students, 11 master coursework students and currently supervising 35 postgraduate students as a Chairman and Member of Supervisory Committee. Under his chairmanship, one PhD and three MS students respectively were graduated. Dr. Ahmad Zaharin Aris is a scientific researcher and he was awarded research grants from local and international bodies to conduct various scientific activities as Principal Investigator and Researcher. Up to now, he has received more than one million ringgit funding as a Principal Investigator. In recognition of his academic and leadership capabilities, he was awarded with Excellence Service Award and Publication Incentive Award, Universiti Putra Malaysia. He appeared in few newspapers headline as “Youngest PhD recipient” in 2009 and recently appeared in “Malaysia: Who’s Who, Constitution, Government and Politics (2013/2014 Edition)” on “Youngest PhD graduate” published by Kasuya Management Sdn. Bhd. Recently, he was awarded with a prestigious award by Universiti Putra Malaysia with Young Scientist Award for 2013 and Vice Chancellor Fellowship Award due to his extraordinary achievements in research. Due to deep recognition in his field, he is currently a Review Editor/Associate Editor for many national and international journals. Dr. Ahmad Zaharin has published more than 240 academic writings related to his field in refereed international journals (more than 130; 117 in SCI Journals), books (3; 1 published by Springer-Verlag) and chapters in books (35) and the rest is conference papers. Currently, his h-index is 12 (Scopus) with 464 citations. He also acts as panel of expert and advisor to Department of Environment, Malaysia and Ministry of Health Malaysia on the issues related to water security.
