Biography

Constantine M. Vassalos M.D., M.Sc.P.H., Ph.D. Completed his undergraduate Studies at the Medical School, University of Ioannina, Greece in 1999. He served as Medical Officer at the World Health Organization/Mediterranean Centre (WHO/MZCC). He received his M.Sc. degree in Public Health from the National School of Public Health, Athens, Greece. Also, he received his Ph.D. degree in Microbiology (Parasitology) from Microbiology Laboratory, Medical School, University of Ioannina, Ioannina, Greece. He attended Ttraining Courses on Zoonoses and Foodborne Infections organized by the WHO/MZCC and the International Office of Epizootics (OIE) as well as Courses on Parasites and Malaria at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He trained at Internal Medicine and AIDS Clinic for 1 year. At the General Hospital of Athens ‘G. Gennimatas’, one of Greece’s largest hospitals, he completed his training in Medical Biopathology (Microbiology) in 2007. After his residency, he was a Research Assistant in the Department of Parasitology, Entomology and Tropical Diseases, National School of Public Health, Athens, Greece from 2007 to 2009, when he became a Postdoctoral Research Associate.

After his residency, he was a Research Assistant in the Department of Parasitology, Entomology and Tropical Diseases, National School of Public Health, Athens, Greece from 2007 to 2009, when he became a Postdoctoral Research Associate. One of his responsibilities was to improve the diagnosis of enteroparasitoses at the Department of Parasitology. He started to study laborious culture procedures and ended in a simplified culture suitable for the development of at least one intestinal parasite. Till today he continues to be actively involved in the research conducted by Parasitology Department.

Since 2000 his research has focused on several issues including parasitic diseases, intestinal parasitoses in particular, zoonoses, such as brucellosis and echinococcosis, foodborne infections with special interest in epidemiology and control. Recently, he focuses on zoonotic strains of Blastocystis for better understanding host-parasite interactions. He is instructor for the subject area of Intestinal Parasites within the Course on Current Trends in Parasitology and Entomology at the National School of Public Health, Athens, Greece.

Dr. Vassalos has received a partial contribution from a national funding agency to support his ongoing research on exploring Blastocystis contribution in human pathogenesis.
